Optimal® Flywheel Power Module

The Optimal® Flywheel Power Module (FPoM) is comprised of an integrated rotor-motor-generator (RMG) that rotates an array of eighteen large magnets at supersonic velocities to generate the extreme power densities exhibited by our machines. The integrated RMG sustains the centrifugal loads at these high speeds through a patented growth-matching rotor design that minimizes stresses in the magnets and the rotor. The two stators in the flywheel module (one on each side of the flywheel rotor) are completely ironless to minimize losses in the machine when operating at these extreme magnet velocities.

The patented technology in the Optimal® FPoM enhances operational energy storage and power output of the flywheel through the following patented features:

  • Growth-matching steel hub (low stress rotor, enhanced energy storage)
  • Supersonic magnet array capture (creates extreme power densities)
  • Ironless stators (improved efficiency)
  • Rotating backiron (reduces electrical drag losses)
